There are over one hundred and twenty (120) type of visas in the current Australian Migration program. Each type is called a "Class" or a "Sub Class" visa; as such, this can be confusing for intending migrants. For this reason we have included general categories only (excluding refugee, humanitarian and protection visas) under the visa type; a few examples are given below. There are visas which can only be applied for off-shore (i.e. outside Australia); others may be applied for both on/off-shore and some from within Australia only.

Visa types
There are temporary visas for particular purposes – business and otherwise. With the exception of the family category temporary visas, these visas remain temporary. There are provisional visas allowing the visa holder to apply for Australian Permanent Residence after meeting specific criteria; for instance, temporary residence in Australia for at least two years, e.g. spouse etc. Some business skills visas also come under this category; for example "provisional business visas". Then there are permanent visas which give permanent residency from the outset, or which can be granted subsequent to temporary or provisional visas.
